Prevalence, distribution and control of potato virus Y (PVY) strains in Kenyan potato cultivars

چکیده

Abstract Potato virus Y (PVY) causes major yield losses in potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) crops worldwide. Over the past few decades, two new PVY strains (PVY N−Wi/N:O and NTN ) have become prevalent widely distributed In Kenya, there is limited information on prevalence distribution of cultivars grown farmer’s fields. This a limiting factor making decisions for setting up basis control. study was therefore conducted (a) to determine present different potato-growing counties (b) use this knowledge proposing strategy To end, leaf sampling survey 354 farms five Kenya with follow-up surveys more seasons. Collected samples were tested using DAS-ELISA, those found be infected subjected reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) strains. Overall generally low (8.2%). Out all PVY-infected plants, most strain (54.9%) followed by O (28.0%) (17.1%), while N not detected. The occurred across three seasons but only specific cultivars. Three identified as resistant, cultivar Shangi (60.2%) had 0.6%. an indication that may already been useful minimizing report first resistance; addition, results obtained provide focus resistance breeding Kenya.

Induction of Resistance to Potato Virus Y (PVY) Using Hairpin Construct of Coat Protein

Potato virus Y (PVY) is one of the most damaging viruses of potato plants which infecting most cultivars and causing significant yield and economical losses. The application of the concept of pathogen derived resistance opened new horizons for the development of virus-resistant plants. This research was carried out to study RNA silencing to engineered potato plants that are resistant to potato ...

Digoxigenin-labelled molecular probe for the simultaneous detection of three potato pathogens: potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd), potato virus Y (PVY), and potato leafroll virus (PLRV).

A molecular probe, p3POT, was constructed of PSTVd, PVY, PLRV cDNA fragments introduced into pUC18 vector. Sequencing of the inserts revealed that cloned fragments covered conservative parts of pathogenic genomes. Dot-blot hybridization of digoxigenin-labelled construct to crude extracts from plants infected with different potato viruses proved high sensitivity and specificity of the p3POT prob...

Comparison between Proteome and Transcriptome Response in Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) Leaves Following Potato Virus Y (PVY) Infection

Plant diseases caused by viral infection are affecting all major crops. Being an obligate intracellular organisms, chemical control of these pathogens is so far not applied in the field except to control the insect vectors of the viruses. Understanding of molecular responses of plant immunity is therefore economically important, guiding the enforcement of crop resistance. To disentangle complex...

Biological, serological and molecular typing of potato virus Y (PVY) isolates from Tunisia.

In Tunisia, potato virus Y (PVY) currently presents a significant threat to potato production, reducing tuber yield and quality. Three hundred and eighty-five potato samples (six different cultivars) collected in autumn 2007 from nine regions in Tunisia were tested for PVY infection by DAS-ELISA. The virus was detected in all regions surveyed, with an average incidence of 80.26%. Subsequently, ...
